Huh, that could have a lot of potential! I’d see that as a positive turn out, but yeah... I won’t be holding my breath.

That's definitely an interesting time period to explore! I wonder how much extrapolating there will be - there's definitely information on the Second Age in places like Unfinished Tales, but to fully flesh it out they might end up taking the fanfiction route PJ-style and inventing some noncanonical stuff. I do hope they've got some Tolkien geeks on set to keep them in line haha 😂

Lol no kidding! They need their own Tolkien Geek Squad. Lol But yeah, if they create a lot of non cannon material, that could really make or break the show depending on how they handle it.

I recommend reading the whole article, but I will quote this part here: I have been on Tolkien Forums 'discussing' this with some rabid 'PJ is Middle Earth ' worshippers who are adamant in their opinion that 'only Peter Jackson can re-produce Middle Earth' and have already made their mind up they won't like this series. As the September 2nd debut approaches, we will likely see more teaser and trailer footage in ads for the show, and after reviewing most of the little bit of 'solid' information over the last couple years, my tilt-o-meter is now hovering in the 'cautiously optimistic' area.

I'll read that article this afternoon! Thanks Hanasian I'd give anything to be hired as a Tolkien and Middle-Earth lore expert like those three individuals. The only time I came close was when I got to skip PE classes a couple of times - one of the English teachers in the tiny school I went to knew I was a geek and got me to basically answer questions the kids in the year below me had about LotR. 😂 But anyway, I'm very, very glad and relieved to know that Tolkien's Estate is involved and seem pleased with what's happening. That does put me into the 'cautiously optimistic' area too!

I forgot to add that Amazon purchased MGM Studios earlier in 2021 which upon the deal closing, will give them the old 1969 United Artists rights that Saul Zaentz had for decades. These rights were what led to the LotR and Hobbit animated series, board games, and video games. I'm not sure how the legal working are with the Tolkien Estate/Amazon agreement that specifically forbade Amazon from using anything other than what was agreed upon in that deal, and their rights to use what is covered by the United Artist agreements. One thing is it has expanded Amazon's pool of resource material, and it opens the door for Amazon to make new Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies should they wish to.

I spotted this interesting bit of information today. Since Tolkien in a lot of his family lines either didn't mention, or mentioned in passing without naming, the women of the lines, this sounds pretty good to me. There has to be some original characters, otherwise there wouldn't be a whole lot to base five years of story on. It is totally reasonable to think Elendil had a daughter... I find this sort of fascinating as I know it will be a fair percentage fanfic. I just hope they keep the 'spirit' intact. Oh yes, If you are curious about the cast, here are some of them.

Hm, the casting link doesn’t seem to work for me. It tries to load, with no avail, and then gives this error. Error 522 Ray ID: 6d5c15435c0c280f • 2022-01-30 16:30:08 UTC Connection timed out You Browser Working Dallas Cloudflare Working www.omagazine.comHost Error

I see that. I think it happened because the source was linking through to another site. I replaced the link with the one from the original source. Try it now.

We're starting to get some more bits out of Amazon. They released 23 posters that will be used to advertise the Rings of Power. here is one of them... Also, it has been announced that Benjamin Walker will play Gil Galad in the series.

I can't believe the vitriol of many of the comments being made on various pages that shared the Posters and the First Look releases. The haters are really out in force with these new reveals (IMDB has some horrid comments). one thing I noticed is a lot of the people who hate this so bad also think PJ did an awesome job presenting Lord of the Rings. They didn’t mind the many wholesale changes made to that complete book story, saying ‘it needed to be done to appeal to the masses’, yet with this their main reasons for their hatred appears to be a mix of these:
A. I hate it because it is being made by Amazon. B. Bezos made mention of Game of Thrones when he bought the rights, so it is going to be Game of Thrones. C. It’s revisionist ‘woke’ BS (because it isn’t an all-white cast) D. They are making stuff up that isn’t in the source material (original characters and storylines, tweaking canon characters, and such). E. They didn’t use the same actors that PJ did, so it’s crap. F. It doesn’t matter if the Tolkien Estate is actively involved. They only care about money, not Tolkien’s legacy after Christopher died, so it will be crap.
That is just to name a few I’ve come across.

Oh dear. I completely understand having reservations about the new series, especially after the mixed feelings that came with the release of The Hobbit. But those cited reasons just seem a little...weird? And while I don't want to get into politics here, I will say one thing: Reason C makes me very, very annoyed (the idea that some people sneeringly label anything 'woke' when all it's doing is depicting people other than white folks is just nggghhhh.) As for Reason D, making stuff up that isn't in the source material is something PJ himself did, so I'm not sure why his fans would be so quick to rip into this one!

It isn't 'just' PJ fans, though they for some reason seem to feel somewhat threatened by this new series. On one hand they say PJ 'had' to make changes to the source material to appeal to a wider audience, while on the other hand they say the creators of this new series 'can't' make changes to any of the source material to appeal to a wider audience.
Many commenters are just hateful trolls who just want to stir it up and pile on, but most at least have some grasp of Middle Earth.
I don't agree with everything they are doing with this series, but overall I think it will be alright. I have to say I'm a bit more optimistic than I was this time last year.
