Anyone heard any news on the Amazon TV show? Last I heard, it sounded like they were going to totally ruin it. I haven’t checked up on it much lately.

The last thing I heard about it was that one of the actors quit because he didn't like the direction they wanted to take his character. That was a few months ago. And before that I usually hear the same: that they're ruining it and it's not gonna be true to Tolkien's works at all. So sad because a series of good LOTR stuff would have been amazing!!! 😭

As I did with the Peter Jackson movies, I hope for the best, but expect the worst. From what I have seen, I've been getting the vibe that this over-budgeted series will be more like a mashup of Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time set within Middle Earth lore. To be fair, we don't know what we don't know, and the Tolkien estate had a lot of conditions that had to be met on top of the 250 million rights pricetag. It will be set in th Second (Numenorean) age supposedly, so the core material and actual characters at that time is rather limited and so is open to being a very high budgeted fanfic. The studio is doing quite well at keeping the script under wraps, and I will say they have gotten quite a good and interesting stable of young actors for this. Most are original characters, but they have Morfydd Clark as a younger Galadriel which I think is the only 'familiar' character to have been named so far. Here is the 'official' Amazon site for the series.

But I keep hearing such bad things about it so it's hard to stay positive 😅. Hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, I’ve just heard a lot of negative things. :/
I guess we will find out, but I agree... a good LOTR series would be awesome! I’ll have to check out that link, though. I don’t think I’ve ever been to the official site.

I'm in two minds of if I want to see it. I heard that too, that it is a Game of Thrones sort of thing. I really didn't like Game of Thrones, especially all the smut. I feel like LotR is the sort of thing that has such an extensive history, lore, and strong characters written to everything (even the stuff that didn't make it into the main trilogy or The Hobbit), that it doesn't need smut to carry it. I'd rather leave the picture I have of Middle Earth untainted by that.
That being said, I'll probably give the first episode a look. Or if I can't get to see it during the main airing, ask someone who has seen it if it is basically Game of Thrones with a LotR mask on it.

Yeah, totally agree about that. I definitely don’t feel like it needs the smut and don’t feel like that would improve on a LOTR show.
I’m sure I’ll probably check out the first couple episodes at some point just to see for myself, just not getting my hopes up too high.

Amazon is really going to great lengths to keep leaks from occurring, so there is heaps of speculation on just about every little announcement. things like this... That was back in October and can be read fully here. I think the 'smut' talk stemmed from there being a 'relationship' producer on set. Doubtful it will be anything as gratuitous as what was presented in Game of Thrones since the source material doesn't have such scenes, but it will likely be a bit more than what some puritans will wish to see. Here is the in-depth 'spy-report' from July, and one of the interesting points made is this...

Gotcha. So at this point most of what we hear could be (and probably is) rather untrustworthy.

I'm very much in two minds about this one as well. I'm just glad that they haven't touched the First Age - I am very protective of that era lol and even though we live in a golden age when it comes to entertainment, I doubt that anyone would be able to do it justice, and especially without turning it into another Game of Thrones.

Yeah, I’m afraid you are probably right. It would take a truly spectacular effort to do that right.
Here’s hoping, though. Maybe it will turn out better than what I anticipated.

Well, we have until September to find out. Hopefully some teasers/trailers will come out before then.

True true. Might as well settle in for the wait I suppose.

Like it or not, Amazon owns all the current rights to Middle Earth. their $465 million purchase of the new rights was joined by the old United Artist/Saul Zaentz rights Tolkien sold back in 1969 when Amazon bought MGM. From what I understand, only the stories in the Silmarillion (including the three books released of the stories within), and the HoME series. There is pretty much an open source for anything else from Unfinished Tales, and the Return of the King appendices alone opens up a myriad of 3rd age story material should they wish to use it. I am not sure what the aquiring of the old rights affects the agreement with the Tolkien Estate about the use of the Lord of the Rings material that was specifically banned in Amazon's original agreement.

We have an official title for the series now... Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. it will concentrate on the second age when the rings were made. Good time period! Still hoping for the best but expecting the worst, but I have to say my lean is a bit more optimistic
